D&D 4e [Apr. 26th, 2009|08:53 am]
Been playing around with the character creator on D&D Insider (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/insider) plus listened to the PVP D&D Podcast (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/4pod/20090218) and I have to say I would be interested in playing 4e. I still think it doesn't seem to have the FEEL of D&D but it does seem to be an interesting system.

People on forums need to learn to use punctuation. That is all.

It's really amazing how online forums allow people who have no real idea about things "help" people who know even less. I was looking to see if my old Netgear Wireless router had any third party firmware (it doesn't) and stumbled across a forum where a helpful individual (inDUHvidual? heh) going by "Steve" was explaining to someone that his router wouldn't work with Vista because he needed drivers for Vista so it could communicate via tcp/ip with the router. ?!?!

I bought a new car this weekend. I got a 2009 Dodge Challenger. I've already put almost 50 miles on it. I keep looking for excuses to drive somewhere. If I can figure out how to post pics here I will try and post some later in the week.

Wow, so they are going to start charging for DNDInsider before all of it is ready? And if I understand what he is saying they price may go up when the other components are added?

I have a feeling the fans are going to really start moving away from WOC when it comes to fantasy RPG. But I have been wrong before.

D&D? [Jun. 21st, 2008|10:01 am]
I have to say, after skimming the D&D 4E rules some more that it doesn't feel like D&D anymore. Is it an interesting FRPG based on the d20 system? Yes I think it is. I think I understand the business reasons that made WOTC go in this direction, I'm just not sure I agree with them.

There are 2 major issues I see with the system. The first is that everything is the same, all of the classes work almost exactly the same. Everybody has powers, at will, encounter, utility and daily. Yes the flavor of the powers may be different but they are all designed for "encounters" which are assumed to be mostly combat. This leads to the second major issue I have, the game is even more focused on combat then previous versions. Even the utility "powers" are "encounter" driven, heck most of them last "until the end of your next turn". I'll give a prime example: "Fly", now in older versions of the game this was a neat way to get to an area or travel faster. In the new game it gives you a combat advantage and you have to land by the end of your next turn or you fall. The way powers work even extends to magic items. Now most items use "powers" and daily ones at that. Think your gauntlets of orge power are going to give you a nice to hit or damage bonus? Well they will one a day.

When I see what Paizo is doing with 3.xE in there Pathfinder RPG (download the Aplha version of the rules http://paizo.com/store/downloads/pathfinderRPG), which is an evolutionary advance instead of the revolutionary one that is 4E, I see what I think 4E should have been.

I gather that WOTC is trying to pull in the MMO market. I doubt this will work (though if they ever get there online tools up and running maybe they have a shot) and doing so by alienating your long time players seems like a bad idea.

Best Rant Ever [Jun. 19th, 2008|04:23 pm]
From http://shortpacked.livejournal.com/377349.html

[2008/06/17 12:46 am]
Okay, I'll explain.

So Maggie wanted to go to Whole Foods the other day, and she decided she wanted to get something at the drink bar. I see something on the menu overhead that reads "Wheat grass double shot." Wow, that sounds really appetizing!, I started to joke. But that's what Maggie was THERE for.

My mental image of a "wheat grass double shot" could not compare to the reality. I'm all like, "Mmmm, wheat grass." But, dude, did you know it's actual grass? Dude! They just have this square of grass sitting at the counter. They yank the grass out, put it in a little bowl, and then manually grind the grass until dark green juice comes out. They juice the grass. THEY JUICE THE GRASS.

And then they put it in a cup.

And then you drink grass.

It smells like a lawn.

I still can't believe it. What is going on? Why are people drinking grass? Don't they know what they're doing? They're DRINKING GRASS. Maggie says it's "very good for you." Some shit about how grass contains, like, several days worth of nutrients. Well, great. If you're a COW. They can't eat anything but, they don't have a choice, so it works out, but humans have access to Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.

So it went up on our Colbert Report "You're on notice" dry-erase board. She didn't think it was worthy, and so she halfheartedly tried to remove it.

We disagree.
